Basic Chili
Ask anyone to describe their favorite chili and you'll get a list of varied ingredients, heat levels, meat, beans, no beans, etc. This is my basic recipe and it's a good place to start.
Ingredients
- 1 pound lean ground beef
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 14 oz can diced tomatoes
- 1 15oz can tomato sauce
- 1 15 oz can pinto beans
- 1 15oz can dark red kidney beans
- 1 1/2 tbsp chili powder, ancho or regular
- 2 tsp cumin
- 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 2 tsp salt
- 1 tsp pepper
Instructions
- In a large stockpot, brown ground beef. Add onion and garlic and cook until onion is translucent.
- Add the rest of the ingredients to pot. Stir and let come to boil.
- Reduce heat and let simmer for 1 hour.
- Top with cheddar cheese, green onion, sour cream or other garnish.
Notes
- Chili leftovers are so versatile.
- Serve over tortilla chips with all of your favorite nacho toppings.
- Add cooked macaroni to leftover chili, sprinkle with cheddar cheese and bake until bubbly.
- Chili can be frozen for up to 3 months
